Dear friends,

Last week Liz guest dj'd w us and decorated our dank but lovable space with beautiful balloons and tinsel to celebrate Michelle's birthday. It was a rad birthday party. Thanks to Michelle and Liz for celebrating with the L/S crew!

This week's guest selecter/music afficiando is Green F. I'm guessing she'll be amazing not unlike past L/S guests. Raul will be there to play your fave L/S jams as usual, and I'll be playing club classics.

Please stop on by, bring a friend, and spread the word.

xo, Ts

ps. Amedee and Dan guest dj as errrly! returns this Friday, July 31st, 6p-10p at Beauty Bar. All you folks who don't go out, I will see you at this!

i want you

finally up and running after recovering from last night's fun. a quick recap: apologies to raul's fans; he had the flu or summat and couldn't make it out last night. g'mo and design astronaut micke filled in wonderfully. they totally killed it. the reality is that i probably didn't need to dj at all last night. this was micke's debut guest dj gig with L/S. and his selections were super fresh. last night he and greg ranged from kraut to cumbia to indie to disco to etc... one thing that was different last night were the requests. they were weird and random. actually greg got those; he can tell you about that. UPDATE: greg was offered $20 to play the macarena! also, he was asked for "punk rock" but i guess modern lovers was not punk rock enough then was asked to play the doors (!) and then asked to play some black eyed peas. wow

btw, i forming an all female dj crew. if you're interested, i'll teach you everything. just have great taste. i'll teach you all the technicals and beat matching. cf. above then i'll book all your gigs and we'll make lots of money.

next week: bizzy lizzy guest dj's for michelle k's bday. DO NOT MISS OUT ON THIS. it will be special.

apparently i'm a jerk

so... sometimes we take requests; sometimes we don't. at this point in the game, it doesn't phase me one bit. usually it takes $$$ for you to get a request actually. no amount of flirting or offering to get me drinks will get a song played unless coincidence happens. i politely say 'no' and smile. raul is a little more forgiving...

mj's passing has now made this situation irritating. we get requests from EVERYONE to play an mj song. of our own accord, we'll even play some but more likely something not off 'thriller'.

in a generous mood last night, i played a mini-mj set. unsolicited. at the tail end of it a woman comes to the booth and asks for an mj song. the following exchange happened:

is it ok if i make a request? something by michael jackson.

i'm playing michael jackson right now.

can you play some good michael jackson?

hey, are you having a good time?

we'll trust us then.

but i want to hear michael jackson!

hey, how about i buy you a drink?

you're a JERK!

really?! really?! i just asked if you were enjoying yourself and offered to get you a drink, and you call me a jerk for not playing something that has been ubiquitous since mj's death. I AM SO IRRITATED.

Ps. this aside last night was a lot of fun. peeps like riley, micke, adam, jax, dusty, candice, bootsy, dan the automator (!), dusty, etc. buttons, megan, and suraya (sp?) brought the SERIOUS hotness. thank you thank you thank you

Pps. special shout out to Anthony Gordon. he had to put up with a lot of bs and technical difficulties last night but still played great sets. nice to hear none obvious jams and have people responds super positively. Anthony, next time will be better. I promise.

this thursday, ANTHONY from LOQUAT guest djs

This week Anthony from Loquat guest dj's this week. He likes to party on boats, in planes, and in bars with us. Roll through and give him a shout out or heckle him or buy him an unnecessary beer or be in one of his photographs. Maybe he'll play 'Jai Ho'?! Guaranteed to be _______ because, you know, Anthony, is all things to all people, which I love. See you tomorrow!

sidewalk jams

photo depicting beginning of sidewalk dancing stolen from mk (again).

watch this space... i will be putting some details of last thursday's awesomeness up here bit by bit today...
most folks had a three day weekend (maybe longer) so i knew thursday would be very busy. our night has been gaining momentum for sometime now, too. last week one of my oldest/dearest friends/big brother kirk (aka the selecter dj kirk) was our guest dj. currently he does sweater funk and concrete jungle if you haven't checked out his nights yet. also check out his new coffee shop vega (on folsom b/w 8th & 9th) if you have the chance. what few skills i do have i have b/c he taught me them many years ago. both raul and i were excited to have him on board.
intially it sounded like kirk was gonna play some boogie and madchester jams. as anyone who has been to our night knows, we play everything and kirk probably ended up playing a lot of stuff he didn't realize he was going to play.
the night was packed from the get go and there was still a residual mj effect although raul politely turned each request down. when people asked me for mj (pretty much the only request of any of us all night), i asked them that if they were having a good time (which they were), told them to trust us, and maybe, just maybe, we would get some mj in.
lots of faces showed up - both old and new. the vega crew, the sweater funk crowd, our regulars, some birthday peeps, the east bay posse, etc. it was so hot and crowded in there that mk decided to move the dance party to the 19th st sidewalk jamming out with the rad dude (homeless perhaps?) who just couldn't get enough of kirk's r-n-b jams.
lots of women in attendance. seems like every dude that was just standing around was asked to dance. danielle was dancing with this one woman and then they dragged me into the whole thing. since i love dancing, no problem. later i walked up to the woman and thanked her coming out to our night and asked her how she knew danielle? to which she responded, 'who's that?!' i
the night peaked during kirk's set when he played cherrille's 'saturday love'. you could hear the crowd collectively go 'oh, damn!' when that jam went on. much of the same happened throughout the night. i played a somewhat perfunctory set while raul and kirk played lots rad selections. i mostly made sure everyone had drinks and made sure my lady friends were not getting harrassed by drunk dudes.
after our successful evening, we all had tequila shots and then i hopped in a cab and went home. when i got out of the cab, 2 police cars rolled up to the house across the street and drew guns on a dude, yelling at him to get down on the ground. of course, i had no interest in gunplay so i fumbled in for my keys, got inside quickstyle, and proceeded to eat leftover pizza!
